Gone Researchin'

by | May 23, 2014 | General | 4 comments

So, as this post goes live I’m actually out of the country. In Paris, France, one of my very favourite places on earth… so far πŸ˜‰

I’ve gone researchin’. For some reason, ever since my very first visit to Paris back in 2010, I found it beautiful, fascinating, interesting and inspirational. Since then, it’s spawned several stories which have been set there, all very different and all so much fun to write. And yet, I’m not done! One of those tales has been begging for a long time to be extended into a novel, but my hands were tied due to a shitty publisher, who shall remain nameless. Since then, I’m glad to say the publisher is no more (yeah, seriously, they were that bad), so I have the rights to that short story and the characters back, and I can work on the novel. I’m really looking forward to it because I love the story, the plot and the fact that my crazy little brain actually figured out this could be turned into a series. It’s been languishing for too long, and I’m hoping that another research trip to Paris will inspire me all over again and I’ll be bubbling over with ideas, new settings and enthusiasm for the project πŸ™‚

Happy Reading!

    Hi, Lucy,

Have fun! I just finished a novel set in France… lots of opportunities for passion there!

I certainly did, Lisabet. I loved it! (though my feet and legs don't agree πŸ˜‰ )

I look forward to seeing your Paris-inspired writing! On that note, I'm reminded of a comment made by U.S. writer James Baldwin many years ago (1960s?). He was one of many expatriate Americans living in Paris — in his case, because the racism of France (he was a "Negro," to use the standard term of the times) seemed more bearable than the racism of his birth-country. However, he mentioned Chartres Cathedral as a kind of symbol of European Civilization, and he claimed that the most ignorant, illiterate white person could claim a connection with that stunning work of architecture that he couldn't claim, as a person with visible African blood. I disagreed at the time, and I still do. If he had wanted to include Chartres Cathedral in a work of literature, & even write a first-person narrative as someone involved in its conception or construction, I think he would have had every right to do that — at his own risk, of course. (You can't make up the images in the stained-glass windows and still be credible.)

    Bonne chance!

Thanks Jean – it's definitely inspirational!
