It's hard to make films sensual. The director has to work for something more than a photograph. It is not even so much what is shot as the way it is shot and frame, the juxtaposition of images, and the combination of forces in the image. It is easier to describe in painting. Michaelangelo's paintings are sensual but not very erotic. Titian's are erotic and ironic which makes them sensual.

I saw 2001 the other night again and if you are in to men in tight pants, it is pretty erotic especially considering all that powerful homoerotic fucking between the space ship and its inhabitants. That is a matter of pace and flow of the images.

In my opinion, Hollywood for the most part does not have a clue about how to handle sex, eros or sexiness on screen. There are some exceptions of course, but then my sense of what is erotic is fairly out of the mainstream. Movies that dealt with the erotic in interesting ways, for my money, are:

The Lover, with Tony Leung and Jane March. Since this is a popular subject, I will narrow my list down to two films, both foreign in setting or context, but the last by an American director.

Stealing Beauty: Bernardo Betolucci's lush, dreamy epic starring Liv Tyler as a flowering young American tourist trying to find her father and loser her virginity, both at the same time. However, the scene with Rachel Weisz naked at the pool, is worth the rental price alone!

Henry and June: Come on. This film was so controversial they invented a new rating for it! And any movie about the love affair(s) between the two most sexually explicit writers of their times, Henry Miller and Anais Nin, played by Fred Ward and Maria de Medeiros, had better to be controversial. There is so much screwing in this movie, you kind of wonder if Philip Kaufman just used it as an excuse to direct a lesbian sex scene between Uma Thurman and Maria!
