Ah, the age old question. (I love this site, by the way, it's so comfortable!) Perhaps the question was meant to compare pictures and writing, because they are both virtual realities. Then you would compare Sounds to Sight. (as in; the breathy moan of your partner, vs the sight of their face contorted with pleasure)

I believe that (for the most part) men are high on the visual stimulation scale, and women are higher on the written stimulation scale.

When I was younger, I did my share of watching Adult movies, and looking at Erotic photos. And there are still some photos that send a zing through my senses. But as someone earlier pointed out, usually it has to be less of a photo of graphic sex than a photo that shows true intimacy, or a connection of the partners, or an appreciative artistic visual of the human body.

But reading an erotic story can almost always get some kind of sexual humming going in my body.
