A Prickly Problem

Gentlemen, there is a part of most of us that has been missing since birth. (No, girls, not the brain). The foreskin. Most male babies are circumcised...When born the male baby's penis actually looks like a tiny cannoli, with the tip of the fresh penis nestled unsuspectingly in a cuddly wrap of loose fleshly cover, known as the foreskin. Then when we young lads are just getting our bearings, there is a brief swish of the surgeon's blade and about a quarter inch or so of the foreskin is removed in a process chillingly entitled circumcision.

Has my circumcised tribunal been missing something all these years (I mean besides regular, wild passionate intense sex), because of the foreskin snipped and tossed in one of those hospital '"medical waste bags?" Of course this is perhaps an unanswerable question, because males with their foreskins intact have no idea what sex would be with their cock head total exposed. Conversely, males who are victims of circumcision (as the anti-circumcision group would call them), have no idea what they may be missing in foreskin pleasure.

Responding to June (see letter below) I fail to see the point of your letter, what message are you wishing to convey? Nobody has questioned the intelligence or lack of between cut and uncut men. I consider myself as average intelligence and really quite normal even though I was circumcised aged two.

Yes my mother tried to force my skin back too soon believing it was necessary to wash underneath and tore it. This caused infection and led to my circumcision. I went through childhood, adulthood and 30 years into marriage without thinking about my operation.

My wife and I were quite content with our sex life and thought that it was as good as it gets. Then I heard about foreskin restoration and curiosity made me give it a go. I now have a beautiful long foreskin completely covering my cock which looks good and feels good. My wife loves it too, she can't keep her hands off it, she now has something to play with. Having the snip has not affected him in any way. Using that mentality, we have a window in which we can abuse our children in any way we choose, simply because they will be too young to remember it! I can't imagine how anyone would think that ripping a piece of flesh off a newborn is anything less than abuse. At least wait until the child is 1) old enough to decide for himself what he wants, and 2) old enough to be able to get proper anesthesia and pain control. And if you think it "looks nasty as hell", well, great, you've got the dick you want. That's wonderful. But not every circumcised man is happy he was circumcised at birth without his permission. And not everyone thinks it's nasty.

What is this fear of the foreskin in this country all about? What is so damn terrifying about a little skin? Do people know it LOOKS THE SAME when it's erect? The foreskin is just pulled behind the head when it's hard. And frankly, I don't care much about any cock when it's not hard, circumcised or not.

I was circumcised as an infant and for the next 50 years I hated the sight of my mutilated member and tried to prevent anyone from seeing it, even girlfriends. I'm an old guy, circumcised. When young and curious, after becoming a post-virgin person, I checked out the gay stuff-- but only b/j's (I was kind of squeamish about the other, had yet to enjoy anal sex with the various female-type folk I later encountered). I not only don't really recall what the (three, before I decided that the experiment was a failure) guys I had it off with were, cut or not. And, being a counsellor of sorts who had to interview women who'd decided to leave husbands and/or had been raped, quite of few of them were equally equivocal on the subject.

I, having been cut since long before puberty, am in no position to offer any sort of before-and-after testimony. The women that offer opinions above do so on the basis of what scientists call "anecdotal evidence" and use questionable logic. Hey! Whatever (or whoever) turns you on, eh?

 I am uncircumcised but have, for many years, wished that I was circumcised. I think the circumcised penis looks so much more aesthetically attractive. I also have always thought that women will invariably prefer to perform fellatio, which I adore, on a circumcised penis rather than on an uncircumcised one. I am still thinking about having my penis circumcised but I am undecided about any possible disadvantages.

A friend of mine told me about a woman doc that does a lot of these is always careful to use pain relief, but she is an advocate of circ. and always gives a full cut. She is in her fiftys and has probably did hundreds of them and several years back, didnt use any pain med. She says that its best to get it done because they probably will have trouble in the future.

Ok, Anon, if you want to "keep the debate in the 21st century," I'll give you an current day, 21st century perspective. [see Anonymous' entry below]

I'm a registered nurse, and I've worked in labor & delivery for 7 years and in the NICU for 5 years. Circ is big in the Midwest, and our hospital circ's about 75% of the males born here.

Pain relief is a joke. Docs are supposed to apply a topical anesthetic about 1 hour before the procedure, and then cover it and let it sit for that hour, but they NEVER do. They just slap it on, wait about 5 mins. max, then do the procedure. It does nothing for the pain. But then when the parents ask if the baby was given pain relief, the doc can say "yes." There is also an injection, a penile block that can be given, but the docs don't like to use it as it is not very effective, and is very painful for the baby, thereby causing additional pain.

I've seen babies scream until they can't scream any more, choke and gag, vomit, stop breathing, pass out, you name it. And please don't tell me it's just from being strapped to the board, either. It's from having the most sensitive part of his body ripped, crushed, and cut.

We nurses have been told that when we return the baby to the parents, that if the baby is upset, we are to tell the parents that he was upset about being away from mom (though they are rarely upset before the start of the procedure) and if he is quiet, that he 'just slept thru the whole thing.' Doctors and nurse LIE to patients, ALL THE TIME. Unless you have worked in a medical setting, you don't have any idea what really goes on.

I recently changed hospitals, and found that in my new hospital, the circ room is soundproofed. Why? Because it's damn close to some of the patients' rooms.

I never participate in circs -- just as there are nurses who, for ethical reasons, won't hang chemo, I don't help with circs anymore. It's a fucked up, sick, barbaric thing to do to an innocent, non-consenting baby's genitals. Circ is an especially cruel thing to do to a baby, because in a child, the foreskin is fused to the glans, like a fingernail is fused to a finger, and before the foreskin can be cut off, it first it must be forcibly separated from the glans. It doesn't become moveable and able to be retracted for many years.

Circ does not act as a vaccine against HIV/ AIDS either -- the African study this idea comes from was highly flawed and concluded early, and later they stated that they had OVER-stated their initial results. Africa also has 4x higher prostitution rate. BTW, after Israel, the US has the 2nd highest rate of circ, and after Africa, the US has the 2nd highest infection rate. The vast majority of men in Europe are not subjected to circ, and Europe has very low infection rates. Education is the key, not mutilation.

I feel for the men who had this forced on them as infants. They had no say in what was done to their bodies, and I can't imagine how that must feel. But doing it to the next generation is not okay. Let the baby decide when he grows up. It's his body. The decision to circ cannot be undone, and it should be his own choice as to whether he wants his penis altered or not.
