Instant Orgasmby Steve Bodansky, PhD and Vera Bodansky, PhD
Ok. It’s a cheap joke. But it’s post-modern irony and it made me smile. The basic tenet behind Instant Orgasm is that orgasmic pleasure can be had instantly. Speaking as a man, I’ve always believed this to be true and most of the women I’ve known have commented on my impressive ability to have an instant orgasm. Not all of the comments have been favourable. (There goes that post-modern irony again). I shall now put on my serious voice and proceed with this review in a fit and proper manner.
Drs S and V Bodansky are a gifted pair of sexperts. Authors of Extended Massive Orgasm, The Illustrated Extended Massive Orgasm and To Bed or Not to Bed, they have been successfully teaching the art of sexual arousal since 1983. Instant Orgasm follows their previous line of teaching, balancing a blend of clearly explained technical information with practical ideas and advice on how best to take advantage of their insights. The cleverness about this book is that it’s been written by a couple who are both experts in the field of sexual relationships. This works on many levels, giving insights into how the opposite sex are likely to respond, how the same sex are most effectively stimulated and how to get the most satisfying results from self-stimulation for either gender. Naysayers are likely to suggest that they already know these techniques—or at least they know enough to get them through those vital three minutes of the night. And it’s a valid point that most of us have reached our current stage of sexual mastery without the assistance of a sexual self-help manual. But, as Socrates pithily observed: The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing. Actually, it wasn’t just Socrates who said that. My wife keeps assuring me of that point over and over again. But it should be conceded that, whatever any of us have learnt through the trial-and-error of our previous sexual experiences, confirming and compounding that knowledge with the help of a carefully written manual can prove beneficial. And Instant Orgasm is a very well written manual. Copiously illustrated, including chapters on opening your mind, self-pleasure, partnered pleasure and advanced tips for creating orgasms, the book takes the reader on a journey of self-discovery that endeavours to be wholly satisfying. The book is not devoted solely to techniques that can be used by women. There are chapters and subchapters exclusively aimed at men. But, because it’s usually easier (both physically and psychologically) for men to achieve states of heightened arousal and orgasm, the focus of the book deals with increasing pleasure and satisfaction for women. This is not meant as a complaint. The majority of heterosexual male readers will surely be delighted with suggestions and advice on how to improve their techniques to their partner’s satisfaction. But, regardless of this minor imbalance, Instant Orgasm is one of those books that every committed couple should read together if they want to take their shared passion to the next level of satisfaction. In the current consumerist climate that demands immediate gratification, it’s heartening to know that someone is finally applying the Instant Orgasm mentality to our sexual needs.Ashley Lister
